There is something so exciting about planning a new homeschool year. New books, fresh pencils, new routines and a calendar that still looks calm and organized before real life begins.

But if you’re anything like me, planning can also start to feel like alot.

We think about math, reading, science, history, activities, appointments, field trips and everything else our family needs. Before long, the schedule is full and we realize we haven’t actually planned how we are going to keep Christ at the center of it all.

Start With Prayer, Not the Planner

Before filling in every month, begin by praying over your homeschool year.

Ask God what your family needs during this season. Ask Him to guide your plans and help you stay flexible when things don’t go the way you expected.

Because honestly, they probably won’t.

Someone gets sick, a lesson takes longer than planned, your child suddenly becomes fascinated with birds for three weeks, or everyone just needs a slower day. Planning is helpful, but our plans should never make us feel like we are failing when real life happens.

The goal isn’t a perfect year. The goal is to keep coming back to Christ through all of it.

Look at the Whole Year First

Our planner has all twelve months together on one page. I love this because it helps you see the big picture without having to plan every single school day.

Start by marking the months you plan to homeschool. Add your holidays, birthdays, vacations, co-op breaks and any especially busy times of year.

Then you can begin adding devotional studies where they naturally fit.

You might begin your year with our one-day Creation Devotional, use each edition of God’s Perfect Design during the matching season, or explore one continent at a time with Around the World with Animals.

You can also leave space for our Across USA with God packs as they are released, along with the future Across Canada with God series.

You do not need to fit every devotional into one year. There is no prize for finishing everything the fastest. Choose what fits your family and leave space to enjoy it.

Connect Devotionals With What You’re Already Learning

One of the easiest ways to use Morning Flora Devotionals is to connect them with subjects you already have planned.

Studying geography? Add a continent from Around the World with Animals or one of the Across USA with God state packs.

Learning about habitats, migration, animal adaptations or plants? Choose a related devotional from God’s Perfect Design.

Planning a nature study? Pair it with one of the seasonal units and head outside together.

This helps devotional time feel like part of your homeschool instead of just one more seperate subject to squeeze into the morning.

A lesson about migration can lead to a conversation about trusting God’s direction. Studying animal camouflage can show children the wisdom found in God’s design. Learning about a state landmark can remind us that the whole earth belongs to Him.

Science, geography and Scripture don’t have to feel disconnected. God is the Creator of everything we are studying.

Remember What Actually Matters

It is easy to look back on a homeschool year and measure success by finished workbooks, completed lessons and checked boxes.

Those things can be helpful, but they aren’t the most important part.

What matters most is that our children are learning that God’s Word belongs in every part of life. We want them to see His wisdom in creation, recognize His goodness and know that they can come to Him with their questions.

Some devotional days may include a beautiful nature walk, a science activity, colouring pages and a long conversation.

Other days might be one Bible verse read at breakfast while everyone is still in pajamas.

Both count.

Both can plant seeds.
